Pearl Coral (Physogyra lichtensteini)

Aliases

grape coral, small bubble coral

Category

SPS (small polyped stonies)

Description

Similar to the bubble coral, this animal is characterized by the presense of small vesicles or tissue "bubbles" that arise from the polyps. These are zooxanthellae "accommodators" and, by inflation, expose their internal zooxanthellae to much more light. Does not tolerate disturbance by hermit crabs; if the tank contains large numbers of them, the coral may not be a good choice. Colonies, green to greenish white, tend to form massive heads in the wild. Vesicles inflate during the day and deflate at night when the tentacles are extended.

Waterflow

prefers low water flow

Lighting

low light intensity, avoid strong illumination areas

Feeding

Zooxanthellate, but must be fed; will eat lots of food if offered
